Customers over the age of 18 that state that they have the necessary skills to climb without supervision will have to pass the competency test at Leisure World Tiptree.
If you pass this test we will then register you onto the system as a competent climber. This will give you the ability to book onto the unsupervised sessions that run on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
The entry point test will take place upon arrival at Leisure World Tiptree and takes approximately 15 minutes. The test will involve identifying good practice regarding the fitting of a sit harness, tying on and the set up of a belay device. If you are unable to identify the correct images then you may be asked to perform a physical demonstration whilst under the supervision of the instructor.
If you haven’t climbed for a while or feel in any way unsure about best practice, it would be advisable to attend the supervised sessions run on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. This will give you the opportunity to have a refresher with one of our qualified instructors before taking the test.
During these sessions the climbers must supply their own equipment and ensure that it is checked and safe to use before climbing commences or hire from reception.
Young Person Unsupervised Sessions
Young people between the ages of 14-17 years old that wish to take part in the unsupervised sessions will need to pass a competency assessment and obtain written consent from their parents.
The assessments can take place during one of the supervised sessions that run on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. It will cost the price of a supervised session and will be payable whether the climber passes, or is deferred.
After the assessment they will be deemed competent to top rope at the centre or will be deferred. If the climber does not pass they can continue to climb during the session under the supervision of the attending instructor and start gaining the necessary knowledge and experience needed before retaking the test.
Registered climbers under the age of 18 cannot sign in to supervise guest climbers and the membership is limited to top rope climbing only. During these sessions the climbers must supply their own equipment and ensure that it is checked and safe to use before climbing commences or hire from reception.
Customers over the age of 18 that are already registered with Leisure World Tiptree as competent climbers have the option of signing in and supervising up to two novice / junior guests.
Prior to this session taking place the “Supervising Adult” form will need to be filled in by both the registered climber and the guest(s) (if the guest(s) are under 18 you must sign to confirm that you have permission from their parent/guardian).
If a climber chooses to supervise during this session and they are the only competent climber within the party that has signed to take responsibility for your guests, they cannot climb at the same time as the guests – the supervising adult will need to supervise them directly.
A novice climber cannot belay without direct supervision from a competent climber that has signed to take responsibility for them.
If the climber has stated on their registration form that they have sufficient knowledge and experience to perform lead climbing, then they will have to supply their own appropriately rated dynamic rope and quick draws.
