Parking – Frequently Asked Questions

Is parking chargeable?

  • Sports Centre, Rugby Club and Archery Club customers can park free of charge whilst using the facilities – conditions apply. 
  • Free parking stays by customers must still be registered on MiPermit, or within the Sports Centre or Rugby Club buildings. 
  • If you are not a customer using one of the above facilities you will need to pay for your parking – please see the tariff boards and pay via MiPermit. 
  • The first 30 minutes of your stay is free of charge, however, to obtain this free stay you MUST still register this via MiPermit. 

How does MiPermit work?

  • To pay for a parking stay, customers will need to use MiPermit and the following location number: 737945 
  • Once a MiPermit account has been created, customers can download and use the contactless MiPermit app to make payment. 
  • Payments can also be made online, by SMS or phone using MiPermit 
  • Visit www.mipermit.com for details. 

Does the system cover the whole of the car park?

  • Yes, this system applies to the entire car park at the Colchester Northern Gateway Sports Park. 

When does this apply?

  • The whole car park is a 24 hour chargeable car park – please see the tariff boards for charges and how to pay. 
  • You have a 15 minute maximum grace period from when you park your car to when you must have entered your details onto the system. 

What are the opening times of the Car Park?

  • This car park is locked overnight from 10.30pm Mon – Fri and 8.30pm at weekends, excl bank holidays.  
  • Opening times of car park vary subject to building/facility opening times see website for full details.   
  • No entry or exit of any vehicles when the gates are locked. 

Do I need to enter my number plate details every time I visit?

  • Yes, this is a very quick and simple process either using one of our iPads within our building or for our regular groups and members via the MiPermit app. 
  • All customers of Colchester Northern Gateway Sports Centre, the Rugby Club and Archery Club, including members and those attending private hire / club sessions need to follow this new vehicle registration process on each visit. 
  • Whilst using our facilities customers must use the relevant sites iPad or MiPermit app to register your free stay, i.e. the iPad within the Rugby Club or MiPermit app link for Rugby Club users, or the CNG Sports Centre iPad or MiPermit app link for Sports Centre users.
  • If not using facilities parking charges apply.

Where are the iPads located?

  • We have 2 iPads in the lobby/reception area within the Sports Centre. 
  • We have 1 iPad available at the Rugby Centre. 

I drop my children to Activity Sessions / Clubs what do I need to do?

  • You have a 15 minute maximum grace period from when you park your car to when you leave the car park to allow for drop-off and pick-ups. 
  • You can park for free for up to 30minutes but this free stay must be registered using the Mi-Permit system. 
  • If you need to stay longer than 30 minutes you must enter your details onto one of the iPads or MiPermit. 

If I enter my registration number wrongly what will happen?

  • You must ensure that when you add your registration number you are checking that it is correct before taking part in your activity. 
  • If you think you made a mistake as you entered your details, please enter them again to ensure we have the correct details on our system. 
  • Penalties will be issued for any vehicles parked that are not registered. 

Blue Badge parking what do I do?

  • As long as you can display your blue badge and your clock you can park in any bay for 3 hours free parking. 
  • If you wish to park for longer you will need to register your vehicle within one of the centres. 

I have a motorbike or scooter what do I need to do?

  • Motorcycles are exempt from parking tariffs when parked within a clearly marked bay, therefore, as long as you park correctly in one of the designated areas for motorcycles you will not need to enter your vehicle details. 
  • If you park in a parking bay not designated for a motorcycle you will need to register your vehicle within one of the centres or pay for your parking if not a customer. 

What are the EV Charging Point tariffs?

  • In addition to registering or paying for a parking stay, EV charging point tariffs, which are advertised on the charging stations, also apply. 

What if I am not visiting one of the centres?

  • You will need to pay for your parking – please see the tariff boards and pay via MiPermit. 
  • The first 30 minutes of your stay is free of charge, however, to obtain this free stay you MUST still register this via MiPermit. 

What do buses and coaches need to do?

  • Buses and coaches transporting groups of our customers can only drop off within one of the designated areas and must then leave the car park until pick up time. 

What do delivery vehicles need to do?

  • Delivery Vehicles will not be required to register their vehicle or pay to park whilst making deliveries as long as this is done using one of the designated loading bays. 
  • If not using a loading bay delivery staff must register the vehicle using iPads inside relevant building if the delivery exceeds 15 mins. 

Is a parking space guaranteed?

  • No, parking spaces are not guaranteed. 
  • The nearest alternative car park is the Colchester Park & Ride located opposite the entrance to the Sports Park.  They offer a Park Only option – tariffs apply. 

Who is enforcing this car park?

  • The Car Park is owned and enforced by Colchester Borough Council and is covered by the current Parking Order. 

What do I do if I receive a penalty notice?

  • Full instructions of what you need to do are included on the penalty notice. 

Can I leave my car overnight?

  • You can leave your vehicle overnight subject to the relevant parking charges.
