Northern Gateway Sports Park – Frequently Asked Questions

You must book online for all activities before your visit:  

  • Activa Gym – Online Gym Inductions are required for new members   
  • Group Exercise Studios - will commence 17 May 2021  
  • Badminton Courts - household and support bubbles only  
  • Table Tennis - household and support bubbles only  
  • Main Cycle Track Session
  • Pump Track Session

You can download our Leisure World app from the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store. Please then select Northern Gateway when choosing your club.

Whilst we must ask that you book online in advance to take part in activities, as this is a new site we understand that you may just want to come and have a look to see what we offer, grab a coffee and have a tour.  We will do our best to accommodate this, however at busy times and to ensure social distancing is observed we may have to stop entry to the building until space becomes available.

  • Bookings can be made on the Website or through the Leisure World App.  
  • Court Bookings can be made inline with current Government guidelines. 
  • 1:1 coaching is permitted with no limit to clients on one day.  
  • Organised group sport is permitted (rule of 6)   
  • Players must arrive ready to play.  
  • Changing Rooms will remain closed.  

Face Coverings 

  • You will need to wear a face covering inside our Centre whenever you are not exercising unless you are exempt. Find out more on exemptions here 
  • Children under 11 years do not need to wear a face covering.   
  • Please come prepared to wear a face covering.  
  • Face coverings will be available for purchase at our reception.  
  • For your safety we recommend that you do not wear a face covering during exercise. You will be able to leave your covering with your possessions during your activity, or in your locker if available.  
  • Please take disposable face coverings home with you and dispose of them responsibly. 

In line with conditions set by the Government for re-opening of our facilities on 12 April we need to collect information of everyone who is aged over 16 years.

To do this we ask all those attending who have not made a booking using their Leisure Card account i.e. an adult playing against the Leisure Card holder who made the booking for a badminton court, who are aged over 16 year to check-in at our sites using the NHS Test & Trace QR code provided for our sites.

We encourage you to download the NHS Test & Trace app in advance of your visit details can be found here. If you are unable to use the QR code scanning system we will ask you to give details manually upon entry.

This process will apply for each visit. More information on why we are asking for this information can be found here The information you provide will only be used for the purpose of assisting with the NHS test and trace and will not be used for any other purpose. I would like to come to Colchester Northern Gateway Sports Park, how can I make a booking?

I am an existing Leisure Card holder, but I have not received an email giving me my ID? 

Please email us at contact.leisureworld@colchester.gov.uk with the following verification details so that we can send you your ID:  

  • First Name  
  • Surname  
  • Date of Birth  
  • Postcode  
  • House name or number  

Alternatively, if you would prefer to discuss this with someone at Colchester Northern Gateway Sports Park, please either email us with your name and phone number or leave us a message on 01206 282000 and we will get back to you as soon as we can.  

 

What do I need to do when I arrive at Colchester Northern Gateway Sports Park for my booked activity? 

You may be required to join a queue at busy times. If this is the case, please practice social distancing and wait at the final floor marking before the entrance before being called forward into the lobby by a member of staff.  

  • Please keep to the time booked and do not arrive earlier than 5 minutes before the start time of your booked session.  If you arrive early you will not be admitted until your allocated time. You may be asked to wait away from our building or queueing systems.  
  • You will need to bring your Leisure Card, fob, wristband or phone sticker to go through the door access control within the centre and to access our outside tracks. If you do not have this you will be asked to join the queue to the Welcome Zone desk where you will be issued with a new card linked to your Leisure Card account.  
  • You may be instructed to leave via another exit and not back through our front entrance to maintain one-way traffic through our facilities.  
  • Please follow instructions given by our staff and when informed that your session time has finished, you must vacate the facility promptly.  

It is vital that you follow social distancing guidelines when using our facilities. Please also see the terms and conditions on our website when using our facilities.  

Why do I have to be a Leisure Card holder and book in advance? 

Our online booking system is not able to offer guest check-out, therefore, to book online for all available activities or via our Leisure World App for selected activities you do need to be a Leisure Card holder. If you do not already have a Leisure Card account, it is free of charge and you can set one up here.  

Additionally, by asking all customers to become Leisure Card holders we are gathering customer information that we can then provide to the NHS to assist with the test and trace system if required to do so.

By operating on a pre-booking only basis we can also achieve the following which helps us to practice social distancing:  

  • We remove the chance of long, unexpected queues.  
  • We can ensure that numbers per session are not exceeded.

How do I make an account to book online? 

Bookings can be made online for all available activities or via our Leisure World App for selected activities. 

If you are an existing Leisure Card holder and do not already use the App or online bookings, you will need to use your ID and a PIN to access the system.  

You can request a PIN by entering your member ID number here and clicking ‘Request PIN.’ We will then generate a PIN and send it to your registered email address. Once you have made a booking, a booking confirmation email will be sent to you.  

 If you do not already have a Leisure Card account, it is free of charge and you can set one up here. You will be sent your ID and PIN in separate emails.  The ID email will include a link to activate your account and get your PIN.

  Which activities can I book online?  

You can book all the activities that we currently offer online. These are:  

  • Group Exercise Classes / Aerobics Classes - will resume from 17 May 2021  
  • Cycle Tracks including Pump Track – bike and helmet hire can be reserved by completion of a ‘Hire Request Form’ that will be linked in your Cycle track confirmation email.  72 hours minimum notice is required to guarantee availability of equipment. 
  • Badminton – Same Household and support bubble games only   
  • Table Tennis – Same Household and support bubble games only  

 

Which activities can I book via the Leisure World app?  

 You can book selected activities via our Leisure World app these are:  

  • Group Exercise Classes / Aerobics Classes will resume from 17th May 2021

  • Table Tennis – Same Household and support bubble Singles or Doubles only

How do I book for the Cycle Tracks and Bike Hire? 

To ensure that our customers and staff can practice social distancing all activities must be booked in advance of your visit.  

Bookings can be made online for all available activities or via our Leisure World App for selected activities.  

You must be registered as a Leisure Card holder to make a booking.  If you do not already have a Leisure Card account, it is free of charge and you can set one up here.

Once signed up you will be sent your ID and PIN in separate emails.  The ID email will include a link to activate your account and get your PIN.  

Select the option of ‘Open Track Session’ or ‘Pump Track Session’ and then the date and time slot you wish to book.  You will need to book a place for all persons in your family/group, i.e., 1 adult, 2 juniors, 1 under 3 years.  Once you have selected all the places you required you can follow the check-out process.   

Once you have made an online booking, a booking confirmation email will be sent to you with a link to your ‘Hire Request Form’ to reserve your bikes and helmets if required. We cannot guarantee availability of equipment, therefore, when you complete the form and we will confirm your reservation within the next 24 hours.  If your booking is within the next 24 hours please phone 01206 282000.

(Please note: If you are a Lifestyles member your Cycle Track open session place will be free of charge and this will show as ‘zero’ at check-out, however, if others in your family/group are also Lifestyles members i.e., your children hold memberships these will be charged, and we will issue a refund when you visit.)  

We apologise, but unfortunately our current system does not recognise others in your party who hold Lifestyles memberships. Therefore, please book online and pay for the others in your party.  When you arrive, you will be able to go to the Welcome Zone reception desk or our Cycle Shop Reception where we will look up your booking and the other Lifestyles members in your group and issue a card refund, therefore, please bring the card used when you made the original booking with you. We are sorry for any inconvenience this causes and assure you that we are working on ways to improve this.  

Do I need to pay a deposit or provide ID for Bike and Helmet hire?  

You will be able to reserve your Bikes and Helmets for your party using the ‘Hire Request Form’ that will be linked to your Cycle track booking confirmation email. 

You will need to pay for hire at the point of collection.  We do not require hire deposits, however, hire is subject to you providing proof of ID.  We will therefore need you to bring the following forms of ID for us to look at to check your ID and that the address matches your Leisure Card account.  We will register that this check has been carried out your Leisure Card account which will last for a period of 6 months, therefore, you may need to provide ID twice a year if you are a regular user. 

Any one of the following combinations will need to be shown: 

  • British Photo Driving Licence 

Or 

  • Passport and in date* Utility Bill or Bank Statement (*no older than 3 months) 

Or 

  • Credit/Debit Card and in date* Utility Bill or Bank Statement (*no older than 3 months) 

I am a Lifestyles member, and a charge is showing online when booking the Cycle Track?

If you are a Lifestyles member your Cycle Track booking will be free of charge and this will show as ‘zero’ at check-out.

How do I book for a Gym Workout in Activa Gym? 

To ensure that our customers and staff can practice social distancing all activities must be booked in advance of your visit. Please do not attend if you have not pre-booked as you will not be admitted. Bookings need to be made via our Leisure World App or online.

To use the Leisure World App or book online you will need to be a Leisure Card holder. If you do not already have a Leisure Card account, it’s free of charge and you can set one up here: Online Bookings by selecting ‘Sign Up Now’. More information about our free Leisure Card are on our website: My Leisure Card Once signed up you will be sent your ID and PIN in separate emails. The ID email will include a link to activate your account and get your PIN. To access the online bookings you can either click ‘Book Now’ from the sign-up screen or make your booking by logging in online here: Online Bookings Select the option of Gym Workout  and then the date and time slot you wish to book. If you are attending with others, each person will need to make their own booking under their ID.

How do I book a Group Fitness class/Aerobics session?   

Group Fitness sessions will resume from 17th May 2021  

Booking for group Fitness Sessions will not be bookable until 10th May 2021.

Please do not attend if you have not pre-booked as you will not be admitted.

(Please note: if you are a Lifestyles member your workout will be free of charge and this will show as ‘zero’ at check-out, however, if other adults in your family/group are also Lifestyles members they will need to make a separate booking under their own ID in order that their place is also free of charge.)  

If you are attending with others, each person will need to make their own booking under their ID.

How do I book a Badminton Court, Table Tennis, Squash? 

To ensure that our customers and staff can practice social distancing all activities must be booked in advance of your visit.  

Badminton and Table Tennis bookings are per court for a maximum of 2 people playing singles.  

Please do not attend if you have not pre-booked as you will not be admitted.  

Bookings can be made online for all available activities or via our Leisure World App for selected activities.

  • Adults – household only singles or doubles permitted  
  • Young people – junior clubs/organised sessions/coached sessions/recreational activity – all permitted with no limits  
  • Coaching – young people permitted; adults to be confirmed 
  • Competition– localised junior tournaments and junior leagues permitted  
  • Recreational/outdoor badminton – permitted with maximum 6 players or two households  

Table Tennis 

  • Adults – household only singles or doubles permitted  
  • Young people – junior clubs/organised sessions/coached sessions/recreational activity – all permitted with no limits  
  • Coaching – young people permitted; adults to be confirmed  
  • Competition– localised junior tournaments and junior leagues permitted

Can I attend as a spectator? 

Yes we have limited space for spectators and this will be monitored indoors. Outside space allows spectators please follow current Government guidance.

I require the assistance of a carer what do I need to do? 

If you require a carer you will need book yourself onto the relevant session at least 48 hours in advance and at the same time email us at contact.leisureworld@colchester.gov.uk to confirm that you need to the assistance of a free of charge carer.  We will then reserve a place for your carer onto our system free of charge.  

Unfortunately, at this time if you wish to book with less than 48 hours’ notice you will have to also book a paid slot for your carer at the same time as you book your slot.  

This is to ensure that we do not exceed the maximum numbers allowed for each session.  

Please note:  Free of charge carers for the Activa Gym are there to give assistance only and not to have a work-out themselves.  If they wish to work-out they will need to book a paid slot.  

Will changing rooms and lockers be available? 

Our changing rooms are now open for indoor activity users, following Government Guidelines. With limited access to showers and changing spaces. Lockers are available in both changing rooms and in communal areas on site Toilets and sinks will be available. Unfortunately, hair dryers will be unavailable.

  How many spaces will be available for each session? 

The following spaces will be available for each session under covid restrictions:  

  • Gym –15 
  • Main Studio Classes – 12 
  • Sports Hall - 30  
  • Velo Studio – 11  

Will the Paddy & Scott’s Coffee Shop be open? 

Paddy & Scott’s at Colchester Northern Gateway Sports Park is now open.  

Monday to Friday 8.00am- 7:00pm Saturday and Sunday 9.00am – 6.00pm  

Self-serve food and drink is available to buy at other times.  

Will you be accepting cash? 

To reduce contamination, we ask that you try not to bring cash, and should you wish to purchase items whilst on site you do so using contactless card payments.  

Booking a Birthday Parties and Private Hires 

Birthday Parties and Private Hires will remain unavailable until the earliest date of 21st June 2021. Enquiries can be submitted via ourwebsite for after this date and you will be contacted by our Welcome Zone Team dependant on Government Guidelines.  

 What is a Gym Induction? 

Anyone who wishes to join the Activa Gym will be required to complete a Gym Induction which is completed online via a video, this can be done in club as well on tablet. 

I have an enquiry what do I do? 

In the first instance please email contact.leisureworld@colchester.gov.uk with your enquiry.  We will endeavour to deal with your enquiry remotely, however, should this not be possible we will arrange an appointment time with you for you to come to site and meet with a member of our team.   

What are the Car Parking arrangements?

The car park is free to use for our customers.  Customers will need to register their free parking stay using the iPads provided within our Leisure World Northern Gateway building.  Please see further details about our Car Park here.
